Who does what in a website project

For diddy projects, a web project can be done single person, and the huge advantage of that is communication is just between you and them. However, a generalist designer may not have the deep knowledge of the specialist in some of the following areas:

  • Planning what you want – a website consultant (like us) may help
  • Managing your project – Grand Designs style DIY or again use a website professional
  • Design – you may already have a designer who has done other material, though website design has some particular constraints that need to be sorted
  • User Experience (UX) design – the look is one thing, how it interacts with the visitor is another
  • Some projects may call for integration with your existing data stores, the design of new databases or interfacing with third-party web services – this is definitely specialist
  • Execution – actually coding the design or putting it on a platform as well as doing the structural Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
  • Training – someone may need to learn how to use the content management system so they can update the website
  • Post launch operations, particularly ‘freshness’, SEO, tuning and broken link checking

So the question for you is... how many hats would one person be wearing?
