We have our own servers in a Bristol co-location house for hosting our clients' websites and supporting databases. This means that we have close control over the websites and databases which we host and manage.
With regard to independent hosting (ie where we're not designing the website), we can advise on the infrastructure but may recommend that the service is provided by our co-location house directly. The latter principally depends upon traffic and resilience requirements.
A robust IT system is essential for any business with web commerce pretensions. It's not good practice to have your web operations bolted on the side of your enterprise and treated as something separate - web operation should always be an integral part of any business. However this means some setups, particularly those that are based around Microsoft Small Business Server, beloved by many IT support companies, are probably the wrong solution. This is something you may not be wanting to hear, but a more structured system can bring both benefits and cost savings.
Once we've clarified the functional requirements of your website (ie what it will do) and non-functional requirements (the look, speed, etc) with you, we are in a position to create a treatment which typically sets out the page design, the web version of the company livery and so on. From the approved treatment, we create the final website.
